Before you buy

Skincare rewards a big budget less than any other category in beauty. The active ingredients with actual evidence behind them (retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide, sunscreen) sell at drugstore prices, and a $90 serum frequently contains the same ones as a $19 serum, at a lower concentration.

Start with what your skin is doing, not with what a product promises. Concentration and formulation matter more than the brand: a well-formulated 0.3% retinol you can tolerate nightly beats a 1% that makes you peel and quit. Introduce one active at a time, so that when something goes wrong you know what caused it. And sunscreen does more visible anti-aging work than everything else in the routine combined.

Every skincare guide here is compiled rather than tested, from ingredient lists, published dermatological guidance and verified buyer reviews, and irritation reports count for more than before-and-after photos. We are not dermatologists. If you have persistent acne, rosacea or a reaction to an active, that is a conversation for one.
