Before you buy

Fit beats every other consideration on a car seat. The safest seat is the one that installs correctly in your specific car and that you secure the same way every time.

A top-rated seat fitted loosely is worse than a budget seat fitted properly, and every seat sold in the US meets the same federal standard.

For strollers, be honest about your actual life rather than the one in the brochure. A large all-terrain stroller is excellent in parks and useless on public transit and apartment stairs. Check the folded footprint against your trunk and hallway first, then the weight you will lift one-handed. Travel systems save money if the pieces suit you and waste it if you replace half of them.

Two things we will not do: recommend a used car seat, since you cannot verify its crash history or expiration, or substitute for a certified child passenger safety technician, who will check your installation free in most areas. Beyond that, expect manufacturer specifications, published safety and expert testing, and verified buyer reviews.
