DMCA and copyright notices

Send a takedown notice, what we need from you, and what happens next.

The short version

  • If you hold the rights to something on this site and believe it is used without permission, email one notice with six things in it (listed below).
  • We acknowledge within two business days and act within five. A complete notice comes down first; questions come second.
  • Product images appear at small sizes to identify the products discussed; the text is our own, and we never reproduce other publications’ reviews.
  • A designated agent is being registered with the U.S. Copyright Office; until then, the email below is the agent address.

What we publish

Before You Buy Guide is a research-and-compilation publication. Product images are used to identify the products being discussed, at small sizes, with the manufacturer named; the text is our own. We do not try products ourselves and we do not reproduce other publications’ reviews. If any of that is wrong in a specific case, we want to hear about it.

Sending a takedown notice

Email beforeyoubuyguide@gmail.com with the subject line “DMCA notice” and include the six things the law asks for:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. The copyrighted work you believe has been infringed (a link or a description).
  3. The exact URL on beforeyoubuyguide.com where the material appears.
  4. Your name, address, telephone number and email address.
  5. A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner.

What happens next

We acknowledge within two business days and act within five. If the notice is complete, the material comes down first and questions get asked second. If it is incomplete, we tell you what is missing. We keep a record of every notice received.

What this meansYou do not need a lawyer to send a notice. A plain email with the six items above is enough, and you will hear back from a person.

Counter-notices

If material you posted was removed and you believe that was a mistake, send a counter-notice to the same address with your contact details, the URL, a statement under penalty of perjury that the removal was a mistake or misidentification, and consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your address.

Designated agent

Registration of a designated agent with the U.S. Copyright Office is pending; until it completes, the email above is the agent address. This page will carry the registered agent’s details once they are on file.
