Decide whether you are an Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home household, because a device that does not speak your assistant’s language turns into a second app you stop opening. Matter and Thread have improved compatibility considerably, though the promise still runs ahead of the reality. Check the specific model rather than the logo on the box.

What to budget. Start with smart plugs and bulbs at $10–$25 each, the cheapest way to learn which automations you actually use. Thermostats at $130–$250 are the only category that reliably pays for itself. Cameras and doorbells at $60–$200 usually carry a subscription for recorded video, and across three years that fee often costs more than the hardware did. Locks at $150–$300 are the one place we would not economize.

The mistakes that cost most. Buying a hub before you own anything that needs one. Filling a house with a brand you have not lived with for a month. And the expensive one, subscriptions: a $100 camera on a $10 monthly plan is a $460 camera over three years.
