Pet products are bought with emotion and used by an animal that has no opinion about branding. That mismatch is why the gap between price and usefulness runs so wide in this category.

What actually varies. Durability and cleanability, almost every time. A fountain is decided by how many parts it has and how easily they come apart, because one that is annoying to clean stops getting cleaned and turns into a bacteria problem. With a bed it is whether the cover comes off and survives a wash, and with a harness it is the hardware rather than the fabric. Automatic feeders come down to what happens in a power cut.

What to budget. Expect $30-$60 for a fountain worth owning, $50-$120 for a bed that survives years of washing, $30-$50 for a good harness and $100-$200 for a feeder you can trust while you are away. Trackers run $50-$100 up front plus $5-$15 a month, which over a dog’s life is the biggest number on this page. Decide whether you want that before you fall for the map.

The mistakes that cost most. Buying for the pet you imagine instead of the one you live with, particularly with toys that assume enthusiasm. Ignoring size and weight ratings on carriers and harnesses, where a bad fit is a safety problem rather than a comfort one. And handing a gadget the job of veterinary advice: monitoring devices track trends, they do not diagnose.
