Before you buy

Consumer electronics is the category where specifications are most abundant and least useful. These guides cover earbuds, headphones, TVs, tablets, e-readers, cameras, smartwatches, speakers, chargers and power banks.

Everything is ranked on how it behaves in daily use rather than on what the spec sheet promises.

What actually varies. Rarely the headline number. TVs are decided by panel type and real-world brightness, not by the resolution everyone quotes, and almost nobody can tell a good 4K set from a great one at normal sofa distance. Earbuds are decided by fit and by how well the noise cancellation handles the frequencies that actually bother you. Cameras are decided by sensor size and autofocus reliability, not megapixels. A 100W power bank with a 60W cable is a 60W power bank.

What to budget. Earbuds reach excellent at $100–$180 and stop improving meaningfully after that. Mid-range TVs at $500–$900 deliver most of what flagship sets do. Tablets are worth buying one tier above the cheapest, because the cheap ones age out of software support fastest. Chargers and cables are the exception where the branded version genuinely matters, for safety rather than speed.

The mistakes that cost most. Buying for a feature you will use twice, which is how people end up with 8K televisions. Ignoring ecosystem lock-in, especially with watches and tablets tied to a phone you may not keep. And forgetting that electronics depreciate faster than almost anything. Last year’s model at 40% off is very often the correct purchase.

Every guide here is compiled from published specifications, independent testing and long-term owner reports rather than hands-on reviews, and each one says who should skip the pick.
