Before you buy

Beauty has the widest gap between price and performance of any category, and it runs in both directions. A $12 drugstore mascara can outperform a $40 one, while a $30 concealer genuinely outlasts six cheaper tubes.

These guides cover skincare, makeup, fragrance, hair care, grooming and the devices that claim to replace a salon.

What actually varies. Formulation and concentration, not packaging. In skincare the active ingredient and its percentage decide the result (retinol, niacinamide, salicylic acid), and a beautiful jar changes nothing. In makeup, complexion products are where research and shade-range investment actually show. With fragrance, the concentration printed on the bottle predicts longevity far better than the price does.

What to budget. Cleansers, shampoos and body care are commodities. Buy cheap and buy often. Actives and complexion products reward spending: $20–$35 for a well-formulated serum, and about the same for a concealer that will not crease. Fragrance splits cleanly, with excellent aquatics under $30 and designer bottles at $100–$180. Tools are the one place where a single $150–$250 purchase can replace years of appointments.

The mistakes that cost most. Buying a whole routine at once, so that when your skin reacts you cannot tell which product did it. Introduce actives one at a time, two weeks apart. Chasing ingredient trends instead of finishing a bottle, when almost every active needs eight to twelve weeks before it shows you anything. Buying luxury cosmetics from unofficial marketplace sellers, where counterfeits are common and have been found to contain real contaminants.

These are research-led compilations, not hands-on tests, and each guide says who should skip a product as clearly as who should buy it.
